Squirrels love oak trees and acorns, but so do wine makers. Its fashionable in wine these days to bash Californians for their obsession with this regal tree. But winemakers the world over use it to add flavor and complexity to their wines. A nice oak barrel can cost hundreds of pounds and often replaced them every 2-3 years, so why bother? Especially when cheaper alternatives like oak wood chips and oak powder are widely available .
This week we will learn all we can about this wise old tree from Tom Ogden. Tom was the CUBWTS President last year and lead the varsity team to victory in London and Épernay.
We will be tasting 6 whites and 6 reds.
Please bring your own set of 6 ISO tasting glasses, available to buy here. These will be available for collection on Sunday!
