Oak and quality

This wine smells like toast!
Wines were stored and sold in barrels for millenia before the era of glass bottles. Now that oak barrels aren’t needed any more, and given that a barrel can cost hundreds of pounds – why do winemakers bother? Join us this week to explore the world of oak: which wines are typically oaked, what effect this has on the wine, and even the difference between different types of oak.

We will also learn about varying quality levels of wine and what makes a high-quality wine.

We are delighted to welcome Aidan Craigwood for this session. Aidan is previous Society President, Varsity Match Winner and individual Top Taster at Varsity. He is a great blind taster and will remind us about the different facets of wine that help guide us to an educated guess as to what a wine is. We will practice assessing the acid level, alcohol and tannins in wines, as well as distinguishing different aromas and flavours. Hopefully, as well as learning about blind wine, you’ll also discover some new wines that you enjoy!

Please bring your own set of 6 ISO tasting glasses. Glasses are available to buy here. If you bought glasses we should have more by Sunday.
