‘Bankers’ (Frequently Encountered Wines)

Have you ever experienced that flash of memory, the gut feeling of “I swear I’ve had this before” after taking a sip of wine?  Well, you are not alone!  There are a number of ubiquitous, well-known, easily recognisable wines with a distinctive palate and aroma, which we call “Bankers”.  Our next session to teach you about these oft-encountered wines will be led by Benson Chen, current CUBWTS president, Varsity Team Captain, and international wine tasting competitor.  If you want to improve your blind tasting skills, these wines are the place to start!  This session is absolutely beginner friendly, and if you have an interest in competing in blind wine tasting, these are the wines to study.  We will be providing five white and five red wines for the tasting.

We ask that you please aim to arrive 10-15 minutes before the session begins so that we can begin pouring immediately.

Tasting glasses: For this and future sessions, we ask that you please bring your own set of SIX tasting glasses.  We will not be providing tasting glasses for our remaining sessions. Glasses are available to buy on our website: https://cubwts.soc.srcf.net/wordpress/events/buy-iso-tasting-glasses/.  If you are attending our Bankers session on Sunday, please order your glasses when you purchase your ticket.  You will be able to collect your glasses at the next tasting that you attend (Sunday onward).

CUBWTS tasting guide: Our Tasting Guide, which is a phenomenal reference if you wish to learn more about blind tasting, is also available for purchase on our website: https://cubwts.soc.srcf.net/wordpress/events/guide/.  It goes through a huge number of grape varieties and their identifiable features (including all the bankers) – an invaluable source of information!  We highly recommend purchasing one if you’re interested in trialling and competing.
